Shooter Training and Practice Opportunities: Vol. 1 No. 1 March 2025

Need more trigger time? Looking for extra instruction? Want to improve your scoresheet but don’t know where to start? Keep reading for resources and ideas.
Go to any local gun range in the afternoon and you are likely to see a Veteran Carroll shooter practicing their craft. Grab your gun, a parent, and maybe even invite a teammate and head to the range and break some targets. Plan ahead what you are going to shoot and bring the correct chokes and ammo. Remember your instruction, take a deep breath and call pull, it will feel great crushing targets on your own and can be a real confidence boost. If you struggle somewhere that’s ok too, just make a note of where you’d like to work at the next team practice. Where can you shoot? Most clubs are open to the public and love seeing young shooters come out.

There’s no substitute for going to the range and shooting, the more you shoot the more comfortable you get with your gun and you build up muscles for effectively moving to targets. Did you know one of the most effective training routines can be done at home? With parent supervision, and making sure no ammunition is in the gun or anywhere around, practice your gun mounts. Start with 10 mounts once or twice a day and move up. Try to do this every day, you will quickly develop muscle memory that will lead to quicker and more accurate shots.
Another great training aid that can be done from home is a VR training gun and headset. There is a cost to getting the gear together but you quickly start saving when you calculate the offset of no ammo, targets, or even leaving the house! The Meta Quest game Clay Hunt VR paired with a realistic gun stock from TextureVR can quickly up your game. You can even play virtually with other SCTT shooters from home.
